Which Country celebrates New Years the First

COVID-19 definitely made 2020 a year to remember. 2020 was challenging but New Year 2021 brings hope and happiness. Countries all around the world are welcoming the New Year in a bid to forget the trying times of the past. In this blog, we will use Tableau to display which Country celebrates New Years the first.

This exercise will be using the customized version of the data presented in the-sun-com. It uses London time to find out when the world will welcome 2021:

I have taken the data from the above mentioned site and modified it according to my requirements,

Data to display Countries and their celebration date/time
Data customized for the dashboard

Comments column is used to combine the Countries located near to each-other and celebrating New Year at the same time.

Which Country celebrates New Years the First

  1. I will connect to my customized data set NewYearCelebrationByCountries.xls. Follow the steps to connect to xls data set.
  2. From the data pane, double click on Countries column. This will create a Map.
  3. On the data pane, right-click on Date and specify the Custom Date format. You can type the values for the format.

4. From the data pane, place Date on the Color card (under Marks). When you place Date on Color, it will get automatically aggregated and will display as Year(Date). Right-click on it and select Exact Date. The Date may change to continuous and display in Green color, make sure to right-click on it again and select Discrete.

Place Comments on the Detail. This will help in displaying the tool-tip.

5. Click on Color and click on Edit Colors to select your desired color. For this example, I selected the gold color.

This will display your Map with dots.

6. From Menu/Map select Map Layers and choose Background style as dark.

The right-most dots represents the locations where New Years is celebrated first.

Add Animation to see how the celebration moves from one country to another

To add animation, place Date to the Pages card. If the Date aggregates to Year(Date), right-click and choose the exact date.

This will display a Date play control on the view. This control can be used to play/run the animation.
