Why Computer knowledge is essential
In today’s world, Computers are used in every Industry.
The application of Computers is far and wide. From Retail stores to manufacturing and construction, to Health-care, computers are implemented in every field. It is almost impossible to survive without computers.
Without computer literacy, the chances of getting an employment will be very limited. Even if one is lucky enough to get an employment, he will not foresee any growth.
In any job listing, the first requirement you will see is about computer skills.
Computer Knowledge, is not only a good choice for a career, but it will also help in your personal life. It will help you in understanding things and make life easier.
Even if you don’t want to specialize in Information technology field, basic skills in Computer Science will teach you useful skills. Like,
- Decomposing a bigger/complex problem into smaller manageable tasks,
- Driving to solutions in a step-by-step methodology using algorithm,
- Reusing already build stuff etc.
How much Computer knowledge is required?
The question comes to anyone’s mind – if Computer skills are required, then how much of it is needed? What is the bare minimum and what is the maximum?
Well, I will answer the second question first. There is no end to learning, in any field, let alone Computers or Information technology. Computer field is as vast as an ocean. You can continue learning it for your entire life.
What amount of knowledge is the bare minimum?
It all depends on the type of work one is doing.
But if you are a novice, then, you should know the following, at the least:
- How to operate a computer System. Laptop or desktop.
You should know how to start/stop a computer system. You should be able to navigate windows explorer for all the files and folders. You should be able to organize your work and your organization’s work in files and folders.
- Configuration of your system. You should be aware of the memory in your system – RAM and hard disk, and the speed of your system. You should know the operating system used on your machine – windows, mac or some other.
3. Learn MS-Office.
MS-Office has a set of vital applications provided by Microsoft. These applications will help you in your day-2-day work.
Ms-word will be used to create letters and documents.
MS-Excel will help in storing and analyzing data.
MS-Power point – will help in creating useful presentations for communication with the Management and team in a meeting.
4. Learn how to read and navigate pdf documents.
Pdf documents are used heavily for official document generation and printing.
5. Learn some reporting tool.
If you cannot learn a complex reporting tool, start with Ms-excel. Ms-excel Pivot can get you started in reporting. Tableau is another good Business Intelligence application to learn for someone starting a career in IT.
6. Create a pathway for future advanced learning.
Basic computer skills will aid you in acquiring a decent job, as well as, serve as a platform for further advanced training.
Whatever your current career is, make sure you take tiny quick steps towards computers, because they are the need of today and the future.
