How to become a successful IT professional

Every human being wants to be successful. The question is not just IT related, everyone wants to know what makes a person successful. How can you achieve what you desire? How to become a successful IT professional?

You can be an IT professional in any stage of your career, these tips will help:

Earn a technical degree

A Bachelors degree or higher is helpful but if going to college is not possible, do a diploma course. Make a careful decision when selecting a college or a training institute because it will take both your time and money and you cannot afford to waste either.

Devote your time in learning the technology

Spend time in learning the technology, it can be a programming language as Java , any database or business intelligence applications like Tableau or Power BI. The better you are at your work, the better will be your chances. Practice, Practice and Practice.

Perform custom development and write code

You can be a lead or a Manager later, but entry will always be as a developer. Write at least one piece of code every day, no matter how big or small. Some technologies may not require writing codes. If you are in that technology, keep refining and practicing whatever “development” tasks are required.

Gain relevant experience in your field of expertise

Every technology is important and will be useful in some industry. Select a technology which you like and then gain working experience in that technology. Initially, you can offer work for free. An other way is to join a discussion group in your technology and resolve posted issues.

Learn multiple programming languages or applications

You don’t have to know 10 but 1 or 2 related technologies will help.

Improve your communication

Be assertive and not aggressive in your communication. Be clear in communicating what you are trying to say. Join a discussion group or start one.

Certifications

Certifications endorse your skills. This may also help, if you don’t have a technical background.

Be in good terms

Always be in good terms with your teachers. If you are already working for an employer, be in good terms with your superiors and colleagues. In the future, you may need references and experience letters.

Networking

If you are in college, be nice to your classmates. Be helpful and collaborate in studies and social events. You may not know this today, but you may be sitting next to a future leader, CIO, CTO or a CEO. Join a networking forum in your area. Meeting people from the same background will broaden your view.
